How To Earn Larger Gratuities

If you want to get larger gratuities, you should be more conscious of how you treat your diners. Maybe you are getting less than average tips because you just want to be a server. Earning bigger tips is not just about giving an order fast, or refilling your customer’s glass. You will have to make a good impression from the start of your customer’s dining experience.

1. As soon as your customer arrives, you have to start on the right foot by giving him a wide smile and greeting your diner in a friendly but polite manner. Make a good impression right away. Take the diner to a clean table with menu on hand. As he sits on his chair, introduce yourself with your nickname. This immediately puts you in a more personal level and raises the chances of earning larger gratuities.

2. Don’t just hand the menu to your customer. Give it to him and then allow a few minutes for him to go through the items on the menu while he chooses a dish, offer to get him a drink. Don’t rush a diner into ordering fast. If you see him having a hard time choosing a dish, make suggestions for an appetizer and main dish.

3. Try to know more about the dishes you serve at the restaurant. Many customers ask about how certain dishes are cooked or what ingredients go into it. Giving an “I don’t know” answer won’t help you get larger gratuities. Find time to ask your chef about how he cooks the meals and ask about what ingredients he uses.

4. Once a diner starts to order, pay attention to him only. After he is done ordering, repeat the orders. Repeating what someone says to you can have a positive effect on people. It shows you were listening and are thoughtful enough to make sure you got the right orders. Mimicking is also one way to get larger gratuities. Psychologists say, you make a person feel more comfortable when you repeat what he says. Just don’t do too many times or you will look a bit silly.

5. Check on your customer every now and then while waits for his order. Refill his glass without waiting for him to request for it. If the order is taking too long to cook, drop by your customer’s table and chit chat a bit. This will make him forget the time and his hunger pangs. A hungry and irritated customer won’t give you larger gratuities that’s for sure.

6. When your customer’s meal is finally ready, make sure the food on your hand matches the order slip. In case you do deliver the wring food, apologize and try to rectify the mistake asap. When you make a mistake make extra efforts to please your customer. Don’t blame others like the kitchen staff for mistakes. Be humble and you may actually have a chance to make bigger tips.

Hopefully you will be able to give your customer a good dining experience. If your diner enjoys his meal plus fast and excellent service, you have a bigger chance of making larger gratuities. Another tip is not to choose which customer to give better service to. You will never know that the guy in the nice suit will give less tips than the next guy in shorts and flip-flops. Treat all customers the same and just give the best possible service with a smile.
